These lovely tiles are found on two very, very old buildings in Barcelos. To my dismay, many old buildings have fallen in disrepair and this is an attempt to preserve a little of the patrimony of Portugal before it's too late. The gold and blue tiles are a Vuiva Lamego pattern from Lisbon.
According to Wikipedia:
Originally a Roman settlement, it expanded and became the seat of the First Duke of Bragança in the 15th century. The palace of the Dukes of Bragança was destroyed by an earthquake in 1755 and is now an open-air museum.
Galo de Barcelos, often used as a symbol of Portugal
The town's famous symbol is a rooster, in Portuguese called o galo de Barcelos ("the Rooster of Barcelos"). One of the many versions of this legend goes that a rich man threw a big party. When the party was over, the rich man noticed that his sterling cutlery was stolen by a guest. He accused a pilgrim and let him go to court. He protested his innocence, but the judge didn't believe him. The judge was about to eat a roasted rooster when the pilgrim said: "If I am innocent, this rooster will crow three times." When the pilgrim was about to be lynched, the rooster crowed. The judge released the pilgrim. The story ends a few years later when the pilgrim returned and made a statue over the event.
The term Azulejo or Tile dates back to the time of Arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula. The term "azulejo is derived from the Arab word (al zulej) which means a smooth and polished stone. It wasn't until the 16th century that the process was perfected into the tile we know today.
This is a very unique piece. The chain is 30" to 32" long and the pill box is about 4.5 x 4cm. It comes with a 1970 Centavo coin (20 Centavos). There are also 2 crosses and a bird. This necklace will come with a gift box.
All my tiles are replicas made of polymer clay where the image actually becomes part of the clay through baking. No glue is used in the process. The pieces become waterproof and scratch resistant. Due to the handmade and hand shaped nature of each tile, slight variations will occur, as no two pieces are alike.
